{"id":154,"date":"2010-12-23T01:27:56","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T22:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.haneda-airport.com\/news\/?p=154"},"modified":"2010-12-23T01:27:56","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T22:27:56","slug":"american-airlines-asked-u-s-regulators-for-permission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.haneda-airport.com\/news\/american-airlines-asked-u-s-regulators-for-permission\/","title":{"rendered":"American Airlines asked U.S. regulators for permission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American Airlines asked U.S. regulators for permission to delay the start of flights between New York\u2019s Kennedy airport and Tokyo\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haneda-airport.com\">Haneda airport<\/a> by about a month, so the service doesn\u2019t begin during a seasonal travel lull.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting until March 1 instead of Jan. 31 as stipulated by the initial award of the route would let American avoid \u201cstart- up in the depths of the off-peak season,\u201d the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier said in a filing yesterday with the U.S. Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p>February is the slowest travel month between Tokyo and the continental U.S., with 25 percent fewer bookings than in March, AMR Corp.\u2019s American said in the filing, which followed a Dec. 13 announcement that service would start on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<p>An extension would allow American to \u201cbenefit from this important seasonal upswing in Tokyo traffic,\u201d according to the filing.<\/p>\n<p>American already sold some tickets for Haneda and will offer passengers rebookings on its existing route from JFK to Tokyo\u2019s Narita airport instead, or a refund, said Tim Smith, a spokesman for the carrier.<\/p>\n<p>Delta Air Lines Inc. previously sought a similar extension on its Haneda flights from Detroit and Los Angeles, and now plans to operate that route on Feb. 19 instead of in January. Hawaiian Holdings Inc.\u2019s Hawaiian Airlines began Honolulu-Haneda flights on Nov. 18.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. carriers couldn\u2019t previously serve Haneda airport, which is closer to downtown Tokyo than Narita airport, until an \u201cOpen Skies\u201d treaty awarded four routes this year.<\/p>\n<p>AMR slipped 4 cents to $8.01 at 1:45 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.
